Training programme on Bioinformatics Approach to Study Plant-Microbe Interaction
29th-30th March, 2010

Organised by:

Sponsored by:
Department of Information Technology (DIT)
Ministry of Communication and Information Technology
Government of India, New Delhi
Recent advances in the field of molecular biology coupled with advances in genomic technologies, have led to an explosive growth in the biological information and has transformed how agricultural research is conducted. Current genome programs generate a large amount of data that require processing, storage and distribution to the multinational research community. The data include not only sequence information, but information on mutations, markers, maps, functional discoveries, etc. which have led to a new emerging field of Bioinformatics. Bioinformatics involves the analysis and interpretation of various types of data, including nucleotide and amino acid sequences, protein domains, protein structures and expression patterns and to elaborate relationships both within the plants data and between plantsand other organisms.
The availability of genome sequence of microbes and plants offers a tremendous opportunity to decipher possible genomic signatures of pathogen-host interactions. The outcome of a host-pathogen interaction may be considered to be governed by a genetic regulatory network that encompasses both organisms. High throughput functional genomics data generated during such interaction describes the concentrations of mRNAs, proteins and metabolites during such condition. Understanding the methods and mechanisms involved in the induction of plant immunity can aid in improving plant disease resistance.
Keeping in view the changed scientific scenario in the postgenomic era and to expose the researchers to the latest computational tools for biological research, a training cum workshop on Bioinformatics Approach to Study Plant-Microbe Interaction is being organized at the Agri-Bioinformatics Promotion Programme, Department of Agricultural Biotechnology, Assam Agricultural University from 29th-30thth March, 2010. The training includes theory and hands-on sessions on different aspects.
OBJECTIVES:
The aim of this training cum workshop is to expose the trainees to basics of plant & microbes interaction study using bioinformatics tools and its application in agricultural research. This program comprises of basic and advanced study domains of Bioinformatics, which are expected to equip the researchers with a complete practical and applied knowledge.
TOPICS:
The prime objective of this training cum workshop is to understand how plant-microbe interaction is used in agricultural research using computational approach. Furthermore the training also provides an insight into current methods and strategies that are being used in plant and microbe interaction study using Bioinformatics tools & techniques.
Main topics to be covered are as under:
* Overview of Bioinformatics
* Databases available to study the interaction between R & Avr genes
* Genomics approach to study R-Avr genes
* Biochemical Pathway analysis involved in plant and microbe interaction
* Gene Finding Tools
* Protein-protein Interaction study
* Hands on training by experts
LEVEL OF PARTICIPANTS:
Students undergoing degree or fresh Graduates/ Faculty/ researchers in Bioinformatics, Biotechnology, Computational Biology, Computer science or any Branches of life science/ agriculture/ horticulture etc.
DURATION AND METHODOLOGY:
Two days, lectures followed by hands on session by experts at Agri Bioinformatics Centre, AAU, Jorhat, Assam.
